Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: Latin positor ; repositor n.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin positor person who posits (c1270 in a British source; in classical Latin in sense ‘builder, founder’) < posit- , past participial stem of pōnere to place (see ponent n. and adj.1) + -or -or suffix. In sense 4 shortened < repositor n.The specific senses 1 and 2 are apparently not recorded in post-classical Latin. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pǫ·zitəɹ) /ˈpɒzɪtə(r)/.
Obsolete.
