Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Acrida , -ian suffix; Greek ἀκρίδ- , ἀκρίς , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Acrida, genus name (see acridid n.) or its etymon ancient Greek ἀκρίδ-, ἀκρίς locust (see acridid n.) + -ian suffix. Compare French acridien (1803 or earlier; 1799 or earlier as acrydien).
