Origin: A borrowing from Malay. Etymon: Malay puntianak.
Etymology: < Malay puntianak.The explanation as < *pati-anak ‘child-killer’ is a folk etymology not supported by linguistic, literary, or historical evidence.
In Malaysian and Indonesian folklore: a female vampire or bloodsucking demon, esp. one taken to be the ghost of a woman who died in childbirth or of a stillborn child. Cf. langsuir n., penanggalan n.

Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Pontianak.
Etymology: < Pontianak, the name of a city, and (formerly) a sultanate, on the island of Borneo, where the production of this rubber originated.
A form of jelutong or coagulated latex produced in parts of Indonesia and Malaysia; spec. that obtained from the tree Dyera costulata (family Apocynaceae). Cf. gutta-jelutong n. at gutta n.2 Compounds 2.
