Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πονηρός , -logy comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πονηρός oppressed, injurious, evil ( < πόνος work, labour ( < an ablaut variant (o -grade) of the root of πένεσθαι to labour: see -penia comb. form) + -ηρος, extended form of -ρος, suffix forming adjectives) + -logy comb. form.
