单词 pondre
释义

pondrev.

Forms: late Middle English poudre (transmission error).
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pondre.
Etymology: < Middle French pondre to produce, engender (e.g. something evil) (early 13th cent. in Old French), transferred use of pondre to lay eggs (early 12th cent. in Anglo-Norman as pundre ; French pondre ) < classical Latin pōnere to deposit (see ponent n. and adj.1).A. Henry Pilgrimage Lyfe Manhode II. (EETS 292, 1988) 472–3 argues that the manuscript spelling oother (as is usual in this manuscript for ‘other’) instead of other (as is usual in this manuscript for ‘or’), shows that the scribe took pondre as a noun; she suggests that if the interpretation as a verb is to be accepted, the spelling oother should be emended to other.
Obsolete. rare.
intransitive. To be productive; to multiply.
