Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ponderositas.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ponderositas weight, heaviness (9th cent. in a British source; frequently c1115–1540 in British sources) < classical Latin ponderōsus ponderous adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Middle French, French ponderosité (1447 in Middle French in sense 2, now obsolete in this sense; 1478 in sense 1, now rare), Spanish ponderosidad heaviness, weight (c1385 or earlier as †ponderosidat; 1552 or earlier in figurative use).
