Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; probably partly modelled on a Spanish lexical item. Etymons: Latin ponderāt- , ponderāre , -ive suffix.
Etymology: Originally < classical Latin ponderāt-, past participial stem of ponderāre ponder v. + -ive suffix. In later use probably after Spanish ponderativo evaluative (1611 or earlier; 1942 or earlier in specific linguistics use, e.g. in the phrases frase ponderativa idiomatic expression of evaluation, pregunta ponderativa rhetorical question).
