Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pond n., scum n.
Etymology: < pond n. + scum n.
1. North American. The free-floating green scum often found in small ponds and other stagnant or slow-moving fresh waters, consisting of various species of lower green and blue-green algae, esp. filamentous species of the genus Spirogyra. As a count noun: a species of such algae. Cf. blanket weed n. at blanket n. and adj. Compounds 2.
