Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pomum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pomum (1686 or earlier in botanical use), spec. use of classical Latin pōmum fruit of any kind, in post-classical Latin an apple (5th cent.), of unknown origin, perhaps a loanword. Compare later pome n.1 1b, and also earlier pomiferous adj. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pōu·mɒ̆m) /ˈpəʊməm/.
Botany. Obsolete.
