Etymology: < French pompoléon (1818 or earlier) < scientific Latin pompoleum , specific epithet (in Citrus pompoleum , name of the shaddock in J. P. Buisson Classes et noms des plantes (1779) 102), probably an alteration of Dutch pompelmoes pampelmoes n. Compare German †Pompelonen (plural) (1847 in the passage translated in quot. 1848). Compare earlier pompion n. 1b, pomelo n. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pǫmpō^u·liǫ̆n) /pɒmˈpəʊliːən/.
