Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish pámpano.
Etymology: < Spanish pámpano, the blue butterfish, Stromateus fiatola (see pomfret n.1).The pompano shell n. at Compounds is said to be so called on account of its being eaten by pompanos.
a. Any of various tropical carangid fishes having a deep, laterally compressed body with an angular outline, many of which are caught for sport; esp. (more fully Florida pompano) Trachinotus carolinus, a silvery food fish of inshore and nearshore waters of the tropical West Atlantic, and (more fully African pompano) Alectis ciliaris (or A. crinitus) of the tropical Atlantic and tropical eastern Pacific, which has numerous long threads projecting backwards from the dorsal and anal fins (also called threadfin). Also pompano fish.
