Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Pōmōna.
Etymology: < classical Latin Pōmōna, the name of a Roman goddess, regarded as the patron of fruits and fruit trees, originally via Middle French pommone (a1480 in the passage translated in quot. 1480 at sense A. 1; Caxton is apparently translating a manuscript source that was not printed until later (1484); French Pomone).In the sense ‘treatise on apples’ (see sense A. 2) apparently by association with either French pomme pome n.1 or post-classical Latin pomum pomum n. With the sense ‘a treatise on the fruit varieties of a particular region’ perhaps compare French pomone ‘the fruit trees of a particular region (collectively)’ ( 1834 in this sense).
