Etymology: < French pomme de terre potato (1750 or earlier in this sense, although used earlier of other tuberous roots: c1240 in Old French with reference to an unidentified plant) < pomme pome n.1 + de de prep. + terre terre n., probably (in this specific sense) after Dutch aardappel (1712 in this sense) or German (regional, now chiefly southern) Erdapfel (17th cent. in this sense).In plural form pommes de terre after the French plural form.
