Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pōmi- , -culture comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin pōmi-, combining form (in e.g. pōmifer : see pomiferous adj.) of pōmum fruit (see pomum n.) + -culture comb. form. Compare Italian pomicoltura , pomicultura fruit growing (1862). Compare also French pomiculteur person who cultivates fruit trees, especially apples and pears (1869). Compare earlier pomology n.In the sense ‘cultivation of apples’ apparently by association with either French pomme pome n.1 or post-classical Latin pomum pomum n. With pomiculturist n. at Derivatives compare earlier culturist n. 1 and agriculturist n., horticulturist n.
The practice or art of cultivating fruit; fruit growing. In later use sometimes applied spec. to the cultivation of apples.
