单词 pomfret
释义

pomfretn.1

Brit. /ˈpɒmfrᵻt/, U.S. /ˈpɑmfrət/
Forms: 1700s pamplee, 1700s paumphlet, 1800s pamflet, 1800s pomphlet, 1800s– pomfret.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Apparently either (i) a borrowing from Portuguese, combined with an English element. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Portuguese pampo , -let suffix; -et suffix1.
Etymology: Apparently either < Portuguese pampo (also pombo , pompo ) kind of fish, especially Stromateus fiatola or (with reference to Brazil) fish of the genus Trachinotus, especially Tranchinotus carolinus (apparently shortened < pâmpano (beginning of 16th cent. as pampano : see below)) + -let suffix, or < Portuguese pamplo (now chiefly Brazilian; also pâmpalo ; probably alteration of pampano ) + -et suffix1. However, the forms in -ph- , -f- in all examples except quot. 1727 at sense 1 are very difficult to account for.Portuguese pâmpano is either a spec. use of pâmpano vine tendril (a1590; probably < Spanish pámpano < classical Latin pampinus (see pampin n.) with suffix substitution), or an alteration of classical Latin pompilus pilot fish (see pompilid adj. and n.) after Spanish pámpano . With Portuguese pâmpano denoting the fish compare Spanish pámpano (1423; compare pompano n.), Italian pampano (1571; attested earliest in a translation from Spanish). For a diminutive (compare -et suffix1) compare Spanish pampanito kind of fish (a1801 or earlier). With Portuguese pampo compare scientific Latin pampus (a1705 or earlier). With Portuguese pamplo, pâmpalo compare Indian French (Punducherry) pample Indo-Pacific butterfish, pomfret (see H. Yule and A. C. Burnell Hobson-Jobson (1886) 545/1), Catalan pàmpol (a1361), Italian regional (Genoa) pàmpalo.

Pomfretn.2

Brit. /ˈpɒmfrᵻt/, U.S. /ˈpɑmfrət/
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: proper name Pontefract.
Etymology: Representing a pronunciation (see note) of the name of Pontefract, a town in the West Riding of Yorkshire (the name occurs in the 13th cent. in the Latin nominative form Ponsfractus and earlier in other case forms; < classical Latin pōns bridge (see pons n.) + fractus , past participle of frangere to break: see fracto- comb. form). Compare earlier Pontefract cake at Pontefract n.This pronunciation (formerly a standard pronunciation but now disused except locally) corresponds to the obsolete place-name form Pomfret, which derives from Pontfreit, Pontfreyt, etc. (parallel forms of the place name from Anglo-Norman elements). It is apparently attested in written form from the 12th cent. (as Pumfrate) to the 17th cent. The equivalent pronunciation apparently then continued in use for the place-name form Pontefract.
