Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pometté.
Etymology: < Middle French pometté (15th cent. in this sense; 1402 in sense ‘decorated with little apples’; French pommeté ) < pommette small apple (see pummet n.; compare Middle French pommette ornamental globe or knob of gold (1418 as pommecte in this sense), finial (1463 as pommecte in this sense)) + -y suffix5. Compare earlier pommelly adj.Compare earlier pomet decorated with knobs or round finials (either < Middle French pometté with loss of ending, or directly < pommette):c1450 (a1400) Libeaus Desconus (Calig. 1894 J. Parker Gloss. Terms Heraldry 174 Cross pomel, or pommelly.., a plain cross terminating in four round pomels, e.g. like the knobs at the end of sword-hilts or in bourdons... We find pomy, and very frequently pometty (Fr. pommettée) and some heralds contend that the latter means something different, i.e. that there are two knobs terminating the ends of the cross.
2005 www.heraldica.org 15 June (O.E.D. Archive) [Arms of French Cities.] Alet-les-Bains (Aude): azure a long cross pometty (i.e. with two knobs at the ends) or between two wings around the long end [etc.].
