Etymology: < either port n.2 or port n.3 + sale n.2The fact that fish were commonly sold on quays and wharves by auction or port-sale led to Cowell mistakenly identifying the first element as port n.1 (see quot. 1607); this was subsequently taken up in later dictionaries, e.g. J. Bullokar Eng. Expositor (1616), Phillips's New World of Words (ed. 6, 1706), J. J. S. Wharton Law Lexicon (1848).1607 J. Cowell Interpreter sig.
