Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: popular adj., -ocracy comb. form.
Etymology: Apparently < popl- (shortened < popular adj., perhaps after people n.) + -ocracy comb. form. Compare Poplocratic adj. and slightly later Popocracy n.1 N.E.D. (1907) enters this under popocracy1 and gives the pronunciation as (poplǫ·krăsi) /pəʊˈplɒkrəsɪ/.
Obsolete.
Popular rule; government by the people.Apparently an isolated use.
