单词 popliteus
释义

popliteusn.

Brit. /pɒˈplɪtiːəs/, /pɒplᵻˈtɪəs/, U.S. /ˌpɑpləˈtiəs/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin popliteus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin popliteus, adjective (in musculus popliteus (1666)) < classical Latin poplit- , poples knee joint, back of the knee, hough, of unknown origin + -eus (see -eous suffix). The Latin word is sometimes erroneously spelt poplitaeus; however, the Latin suffix is -eus, as in corporeus, osseus, sanguineus, etc. N.E.D. (1907) treats the pronunciation /pɒplɪˈtiːəs/ as erroneous.
Anatomy.
A flat muscle at the back of the knee which arises from the lateral condyle of the femur and is inserted into the posterior surface of the tibia, and serves to rotate the tibia on the femur, allowing the fully extended knee to begin flexion. Also popliteus muscle.
