Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French popel, pourpre.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman popel, popelle, Anglo-Norman and Middle French (Tournai) pople (c1314 or earlier in Anglo-Norman; also Middle French (Tournai) pouple ), variant of porpre, pourpre fur or cloth of a dark red colour (see purpure n. and adj.). Compare post-classical Latin popellus, poplus (first half of the 14th cent. in British sources).It is unclear whether the following early examples should be interpreted as showing the Anglo-Norman or the Middle English word:1278 Tournament Purchase Roll in Archaeologia (1814) 17 306 ij fur. pople.1327 in H.
