Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < Anglo-Norman pumete and Middle French pommette a small apple (see pummet n.). Compare French pommette knot trimming a cuff or sleeve (1680 in this sense), Dutch pommet , pommette (1605 in the same sense), although both of these are apparently first attested later than the English word. Perhaps compare Middle English pomet decorated with knobs or round finials (see note at pometty adj.).Perhaps compare also Middle French pommete pattern of embroidery in gold thread on silk, (perhaps) embroidered depiction of a small apple (1st half of the 15th cent. in an apparently isolated use), pommiere kind of ornament on a quilt (1389 in an apparently isolated use). Connection with plumbet n. seems unlikely on semantic grounds (although compare forms and quot. 1882 at that entry).
