Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: pome n.1, citron n.
Etymology: < pome n.1 + citron n., after either classical Latin malum citreum, pomum citreum, post-classical Latin pomum citrinum (c1475), or Anglo-Norman poume citrin, Middle French pomme citrine (c1256 in Old French as pume citrine ). Compare earlier pome-cedre n. and the Anglo-Norman form cited at that entry.
Obsolete.
1. (A name formerly given to) the citron (see citron n. 1a), a citrus fruit of warm climates resembling a large lemon but having less acid flesh and a thick fragrant peel.
