Etymology: < post-classical Latin pomatum cider (?c1475 in a British source), ointment (1589 or earlier in a British source; earlier recorded as a Latin word in an English context in the work quoted in quot. 1562 at sense 1: see quot. 1562 at pomade n.2) < classical Latin pōmum fruit, in post-classical Latin also apple (see pomum n.) + -ātum -ate suffix1.
