Origin: Formed within English, by blending. Etymons: potato n., tomato n.
Etymology: Blend of potato n. and tomato n. (see quot. 1914).
A graft hybrid produced initially by Luther Burbank (1849–1926), U.S. horticulturist, by grafting tomato scions on to potato roots; the edible fruit of such a plant, resembling a white-fleshed tomato. Also: any of certain other apparent hybrids between the potato and the tomato, e.g. one produced by fusing potato and tomato cells.

1905 Cent. Mag. Mar. 668/1 The ‘pomato’, one of the most wonderful creations, now under way. This may be called a tomato growing upon a potato. It produces in abundance a white, fragrant, succulent, delicious fruit upon potato tops.
1914 L. Burbank in J. Whitson et al. L. Burbank: his Methods & Discov. II. ix. 283 As the fruit grew on a hybrid potato vine, and in itself had much the appearance of a tomato, it was christened the ‘Pomato’. The name..led to the unauthorized assumption that the fruit was really a cross between the tomato and the potato. In point of fact, I have never been able to cross these two plants.
1944 Reno (Nevada) Evening Gaz. 11 Jan. 4/2 A plant pathologist..believes he is near success in his project of developing a ‘pomato’ plant.
1971 New Scientist 27 Apr. 263 (caption) Protoplasts of potato and tomato are fused... These cells are then cultured, and from them are grown embryoids and eventually whole ‘pomatoes’. At the moment, research has got as far as the protoplast-fusion stage.
