Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Pomatias , -oid suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pomatias, genus name (attributed to S. Studer by W. Coxe in Trav. in Switzerland (1789) III. 388; < Hellenistic Greek πωματίας a snail with an operculum < ancient Greek πωματ- , πῶμα lid, cover (see poma n.1) + -ίας, suffix forming nouns and adjectives) + -oid suffix. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pomæ·tiˌoid) /pəʊˈmætɪɔɪd/.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Of, relating to, or resembling operculate, terrestrial snails of the prosobranch genus Pomatias or family Pomatiidae.
