Now rare.
1. = pomade n.2 In early use chiefly Scottish; in later use English regional (northern). Eng. Dial. Dict., at pomate sb., records this sense in use in northern England from a 19th cent. Border glossary in the Collection of Prince Louis-Lucien Bonaparte (1813–91).
