Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian pomada, pomata.
Etymology: < Italian pomada, pomata (1495) < pomo pommel (see pommel n.1) + -ata -ade suffix; compare -ado suffix. Compare French †pommade (1608).In forms in pomm- probably partly after French, although compare also pommel n.1 With whole pomada and half pomada (also demi-pomada) compare respectively Italian tutta pomata and mezza pomata (both 1630 or earlier).
Obsolete.
An act of vaulting on to or over a horse with one hand on the pommel of the saddle. Also figurative and in extended use.
