Etymology: < scientific Latin Pomacentrus, genus name ( Lacépède Hist. nat. des poissons (1802) IV. 517; < ancient Greek πῶμα lid, cover (see poma n.¹) + κέντρον : see centrum n.) + -id suffix³, after scientific Latin Pomacentridae, family name (1846 or earlier). Compare French Pomacentres, plural noun (Lacépède 1819).
