Etymology: < German Posaune trumpet, trombone (early 16th cent. in Luther, the modern standard form being due to Luther's influence; Middle High German busīne , busūne , (rare) basūne , bosūne , pusīn , pusūne ), organ reed stop resembling a trombone in tone (end of the 18th cent. or earlier; rare in this sense, the usual term being Posaunenregister ) < Old French busine , bosine , bousine buysine n. N.E.D. (1907) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (pozɑu·nĕ) /poˈzaʊnə/.

1724 Short Explic. Foreign Words Musick Bks. Posaune, a Sackbut, an Instrument of Musick made use of as a Bass to a Trumpet.
1740 J. Grassineau tr. S. De Brossard Musical Dict. 182 Posaune, by us called a sackbut. 'Tis a sort of large Trumpet, fit only to play the bass or tenor to a Trumpet; it must be lengthned and shortned according as the sounds are required to be either grave or acute.
1776 J. Hawkins Gen. Hist. Music IV. i. x. 150 The word Buzain is a corruption of Busaun, or, as it is now spelt Posaune, which signifies a sacbut or bass-trumpet.
