Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish posada.
Etymology: < Spanish posada inn (beginning of the 14th cent. or earlier in this sense; earlier in senses ‘lodging, lodgings, quarters, dwelling, encampment’ (a1207 or earlier)), in Mexican Spanish also (each of a) series of processions or visits paid to friends during the nine days before Christmas (1871 or earlier) < posar to rest, lodge (see pose v.1) + -ada (see -ade suffix). With sense 1 compare French posada inn (1548 in Middle French; < Spanish), Portuguese pousada pousada n.With the form passado compare -ado suffix.
