Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Portunal.
Etymology: < German Portunal (1844 in the passage translated in quot. 1852), apparently a variant or an alteration (perhaps after classical Latin Portūnālis belonging to the god Portunus; < Portūnus (see portunian n. and adj.) + -ālis -al suffix1) of Bordunal , probably < Bordun type of organ stop (compare bourdon n.2) + -al -al suffix1. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pōə·ɹtiŭnăl) /ˈpɔətjʊnəl/.
Music. Obsolete.
An organ stop producing an open flute tone. More fully portunal-flute.
