Etymology: < German Portunal (1844 in the passage translated in quot. 1852), apparently a variant or an alteration (perhaps after classical Latin Portūnālis belonging to the god Portunus; < Portūnus (see portunian n. and adj.) + -ālis -al suffix¹) of Bordunal , probably < Bordun type of organ stop (compare bourdon n.²) + -al -al suffix¹. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pō^ə·ɹtiŭnăl) /ˈpɔətjʊnəl/.

Music. Obsolete.
