Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: poly- comb. form, sepal n., -ous suffix.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + sepal n. + -ous suffix, after French polysépale ( N. J. Necker Phytozool. philos. (1790) 56). Compare monosepalous adj. N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (pǫlise·păləs) /pɒlɪˈsɛpələs/.
Botany.
Of a calyx or involucre: having the parts (sepals or bracts) separate, not united. Opposed to gamosepalous, monosepalous.
