Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πολύπτωτος.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek πολύπτωτος with or in many cases < ancient Greek πολυ- poly- comb. form + -πτωτος falling, cognate with πτῶσις ptosis n. Compare Middle French, French polyptote , noun (1557 in Middle French, subsequently from 1765; rare before 19th cent.). With the noun compare earlier polyptoton n.
