Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: poly- comb. form, Greek ψυχή , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + ancient Greek ψυχή soul (see psyche n.) + -ism suffix. With sense 1 compare slightly earlier polypsychical adj.
Chiefly Philosophy and Psychology.
1. The belief that one person may have multiple souls or spirits; the theory that the mind is composed of multiple psychic elements. Also: multiplicity of souls or psyches.
