Etymology: < post-classical Latin portionarius joint holder of a benefice (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources) < classical Latin portiōn- , portiō portion n. + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare Middle French, French portionnaire (1572 in Middle French as noun in this sense; earlier as adjective in sense ‘having a right to a share’ (1550 in an isolated attestation; subsequently from 1812)). Compare earlier portioner n.
