Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian porporato.
Etymology: < Italian porporato dressed in purple (a1347; 1521 with allusion to cardinals), of or belonging to a cardinal (1678 in an apparently isolated attestation) < classical Latin purpurātus dressed in purple (see purpurate adj.). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pǭ·ɹpŏrĕt) /ˈpɔːpərət/.
Obsolete. rare.
Clad or robed in purple. See purpurate adj. 1.
