Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin porphyrium porphyry n. + -ine suffix4. In sense 2 directly < porphyry n. + -ine suffix4. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pǭ·ɹfĭrəin) /ˈpɔːfɪraɪn/.

Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek πορϕύρα , -ine suffix5.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πορϕύρα purple (see purpure n.) + -ine suffix5, after German Porphyrin (O. Hesse 1865, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. Suppl. 4 42).
Chemistry. rare.
An amorphous alkaloid, C21H25N3O2, obtained from the bark of the Australian tree Alstonia constricta (family Apocynaceae), which produces a red colour on reaction with nitric acid.
