Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek πορϕύρα , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πορϕύρα purple (see purpure n. and adj.) + -ic suffix, after German Porphyrinsäure (O. L. Erdman 1846, in Jrnl. f. prakt. Chem. 37 403). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pǫɹfi·rik) /pɔːˈfɪrɪk/.
Chemistry. Obsolete. rare.
porphyric acid n. Obsolete a yellow crystalline acid, reported to have the formula C10H4N2O7, obtained by the reaction of nitric acid on euxanthone, and producing a blood-red colour on reaction with ammonium carbonate.
