Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German polyphyletisch.
Etymology: < German polyphyletisch (1873 in the passage translated in quot. 1875 at main sense; < poly- poly- comb. form + phyletisch phyletic adj., after Polyphylet , noun ( Haeckel Natürliche Schöpfungsgeschichte (1868) xix. 511)): see -ic suffix. Compare slightly earlier monophyletic adj.
Biology.
Of a group or taxon: descended from more than one separate evolutionary ancestor or ancestral group; (also, esp. in cladistics) not including the most recent common ancestor of all its members. Also: relating to such descent; polygenetic. Cf. monophyletic adj.
