Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: polyphony n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < polyphony n. + -ist suffix, after polyphonism n.Apparently originally used (in sense 1) by W. E. Love (1806–67), English impressionist, who in 1829 produced and appeared in a solo theatrical entertainment called ‘The Peregrinations of a Polyphonist’.
1. A person capable of producing a variety of vocal sounds; a mimic, a ventriloquist. Now historical and rare.
