Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Polyphon.
Etymology: < German Polyphon, use as noun of polyphon polyphonic (19th cent.) < ancient Greek πολύϕωνος (see polyphonous adj.). Compare earlier (in slightly different sense) polyphone n., poliphant n.The machine was invented in Leipzig in 1886 by G. A. Brachhausen and P. Riessner, who subsequently founded the company Polyphon Musikwerke.
Now historical.
A large clockwork or hand-operated musical box, able to play music recorded on interchangeable steel disks by means of punched projections.
