Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Greek πολυώνυμον ; poly- comb. form, -onym comb. form.
Etymology: In sense 1 < ancient Greek πολυώνυμον synonym (recorded in Hellenistic and Byzantine Greek authors, in Peripatetic philosophy), use as noun of neuter of πολυώνυμος (see polyonymous adj.); compare -onym comb. form, also synonym n. In sense 2 directly < poly- comb. form + -onym comb. form; compare onym n., mononym n., trionym n.
