Etymology: < portent n. + -like suffix.In quot. 1743 at sense A., Hanmer's emendation of perttaunt like (in the Quarto of Love's Labour's Lost (1598) v. ii. 67) in his 1743 edition of Shakespeare's Wks., endorsed by Warburton in his 1747 edition. Although Hanmer's reading was not long accepted, the true reading has continued to be a matter of conjecture amongst Shakespearean scholars. In Stanley Wells and Gary Taylor's 1986 edition of the Compl. Wks., the reading is persuant like, modernized to pursuivant-like.
