Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Polymyodi , -an suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Polymyodi, former group name (J. Müller 1847, in Physikalische Abhandl. der Königl. Akad. der Wissensch. zu Berlin 1845 366; < poly- poly- comb. form + ancient Greek μῦς muscle (see myo- comb. form) + ᾠδή song: see ode n.) + -an suffix.Müller intended the name Polymyodi to express the meaning ‘having many song-muscles’.
Ornithology. rare (now historical).
Of a bird: having a syrinx with several distinct muscles; spec. (in Müller's scheme) belonging to the division Polymyodi of passerine birds, nearly corresponding to the suborder Oscines (the songbirds). Also: characteristic of such a bird.

1959 J. Van Tyne & A. J. Berger Fund. Ornithol. 59 Two other terms [to describe characteristics of the syringeal muscles in passerine birds], oligomyodian and polymyodian, appear in the nineteenth century literature, but are now obsolete.
