Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: poly- comb. form, Greek μικτός , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + ancient Greek μικτός mixed (see mictic adj.) + -ic suffix. In sense 1 after Russian polimiktovyj ( M. S. Švecov Petrografija osadočnyx porod (1934) viii. 155). With sense 2 compare amictic adj. 2. Compare oligomictic adj.
1. Geology. Of a sedimentary rock: composed of several minerals or rock types; (of a breccia) containing fragments of differing composition; (of a gravel) containing stones of greatly differing sizes.
