Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πολυμαθής.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πολυμαθής having learnt much < πολυ- poly- comb. form + μάθη learning < the base of μανθάνειν to learn (see mathematics n.). Compare slightly earlier polymathist n. and earlier polyhistor n. With use as adjective compare earlier polymathic adj.
