1976 T. Nakae in Biochem. & Biophysical Res. Communications 71 883 It seems likely that the protein oligomer in Fraction I forms aqueous pore(s), and penetrates through the thickness of the membrane..thus conferring hydrophilic permeability to that membrane. Since proteins with a similar function are expected to be present also in other membranes, I propose to call them porins (Gr. πόρος, pore).
1980 Jrnl. Biol. Chem. 255 1774/1 The porins of mitochondria and some non enteric bacteria are quite similar at least in terms of the size of the pores produced.
1988 Proc. National Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 85 1074/1 E. coli porin appears as a trimer both in outer cell membranes and in reconstituted bilayer membranes.
1994 Proc. National Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 91 513/1 [The membrane] is functionally analagous to the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria and eukaryotic mitochondrial and chloroplast organelles, in which transmembrane porin proteins form nonselective membrane channels.
2001 U.S. News & World Rep. 12 Nov. 68/1 Some bugs make sticky molecules called adhesins, using them like grappling hooks to latch onto a host cell before breaching it with a broadside of hole-boring porins.
