Zoology.
With singular agreement: the phylum comprising the sponges, composed of primitive, sessile, aquatic invertebrates with porous bodies around which water is circulated by the action of specialized cells, and an often elaborate skeleton of calcareous or siliceous spicules or protein fibres. With plural agreement: sponges collectively.
