Etymology: < poly- comb. form + -grapher comb. form. In sense 1 after post-classical Latin poligraphia (1518: see polygraphy n.); compare earlier steganographer n. at steganography n. Derivatives. In senses 2, 3, and 4 ultimately after post-classical Latin polygraphus person who writes on many subjects (a1536 in Erasmus) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek πολυγράϕος (adjective) writing much (see polygraph n.); with sense 2 compare earlier polygraphy n. 3a and later polygraph n. 2; with sense 3 compare slightly later polygraph n. 4; with sense 4 compare earlier polygraph n. 1. In sense 5 after polygraph n. (see sense 3 at that entry).
