1. Materials Science and Physical Geography. The formation of smaller grains within the grains of a metal as a result of the migration of dislocations following deformation and subsequent annealing; a similar phenomenon in other crystalline materials, such as rock and ice. Also: the arrangement of subgrains following such a process.

1948 R. W. Cahn in Rep. Conf. Strength Solids 1947 (Physical Soc.) 137 The x-ray and microscopical results together lead to an interpretation as follows: the deformation leads to elastic bending of glide lamellae; when the crystal is annealed, the lamellae undergo ‘polygonization’.
1949 R. W. Cahn in Jrnl. Inst. Metals 76 136 It is suggested that the process be named polygonization, to distinguish it from other forms of recrystallization.
1950 Engineering 5 May 499/3 Polygonisation could be obtained in hexagonal metals only after plastic bending and not after deformation in tension.
1957 D. McLean Grain Boundaries in Metals vii. 204 The word ‘polygonization’ has lost its original geometrical significance and now refers to the process of dislocations gathering into stable arrays.

1970 Science 30 Jan. 674/3 Shock damage in lunar materials... This technique produces diffraction patterns..that range from spots to streaks.., depending on the degree of polygonization.
1997 Jrnl. Geophysical Res. 102 26583 The onset of polygonization due to increasing strain prevents a further increase in grain size in the Holocene ice.
2. Chiefly Mathematics and Computing. The subdivision of an area or surface into a network of polygons; the result of this.
